Speed is key to supporting stroke patients
Make refreshing your knowledge on how to help a stroke patient a priority this May as it’s Stroke Awareness Month and the Stroke Association has launched a Make May Purple campaign.
The aim of the campaign is to promote awareness of stroke, rebuilding the lives of those that have suffered and importantly how the general public can spot the signs of a stroke early.
Stroke strikes every five minutes, and destroys lives. Speed is critical in helping a stroke patient – the quicker the treatment can be given, the less damage is caused.
Here is a quick reminder of how to recognise a stroke and what you should do.
- Do the fast test:
Face – Can they smile? Is one side of the face drooping?
Arm – Can they lift their arms?
Speech- Is their speech clear? Can they understand you?
Time – to call 999
- Lay the casualty down, raise their head and shoulders
- Reassure & Monitor until help arrives.
