First Aid Instructor Course

The WorkSafe First Aid Instructor Course is a train the trainer course designed to get you teaching first aid in your workplace or as a freelance trainer.

As an independent training provider, WorkSafe is included as one of the Health and Safety Executive’s (HSE) recommended routes for businesses to deliver in-house first aid training within your workplace.  

Deliver training using the WorkSafe certification system and take full advantage of our comprehensive quality control service. We help you to meet the due diligence requirements set by the HSE L74 Approved Code of Practice including provision of independent annual reviews for trainers.

To attend our First Aid Instructor Training Course you will need a three day HSE First Aid at Work qualification and a Level 3 Award in Education and Training. We can help you to gain these qualifications if you do not already hold them.  There are certain exemptions from holding the First Aid at Work, please see our entry requirements for more information.

Our First Aid Instructor course will provide you with comprehensive instructor resources as well as access to our online instructor portal. Your instructor kit includes WorkSafe lesson plans and presentation slides so you will be ready to start training immediately.  We provide standardised materials to ensure your training meets the quality assurance guidelines stipulated in the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981.

The WorkSafe First Aid Instructor course is delivered via a 1 day workshop at our training premises and offices in Warwickshire. The training will equip you with the skills and knowledge to deliver a range of WorkSafe First Aid training courses including the popular Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) and First Aid at Work (FAW) courses. We have a range of other programmes you will also qualify to teach by attending.

All courses are delivered in our dedicated training room at the WorkSafe office in Nuneaton, Warwickshire.

Course Content

The WorkSafe First Aid Instructor Course covers:

  • WorkSafe first aid instructor lesson plans, student materials and teaching resources.

  • Assessment of practical first aid skills including use of an AED.

  • Delivering interactive, hands on first aid training.

  • HSE guidelines and assessment standards.

  • Methods of formal and informal assessment for first aid courses.

  • Administration of courses including use of online instructor portal.

  • Quality control procedures and ongoing verification requirements.

Assessment

Assessment is comprised of:

  • Observation of your CPR and first aid skills during the course.
  • A short, informal written assessment on first aid knowledge with group feedback.
  • Post-course verification of training as part of our quality control processes..

Entry Requirements

Candidates wishing to qualify as a WorkSafe first aid instructor must hold the following pre-requisite qualifications:

  • A current three day First Aid at Work certificate or exemption (eg Nursing, paramedic or GMC registration).

  • A Level 3 or equivalent teaching award or nursing/paramedic mentorship qualification.

WorkSafe deliver both the First Aid at Work and Level 3 teaching courses if you need to gain these qualifications.

  • WorkSafe PowerPoint presentations for all courses available for download via our instructor portal.

Additionally, all WorkSafe instructors have access to the online WorkSafe Instructor Portal which enables easy course notifications, student registration, ordering of course materials and general administration support.

Following attendance on one of our instructor courses you will be able to register your organisation or company as a WorkSafe Training Provider.

All WorkSafe training courses must be delivered through an approved training provider and each student issued with a WorkSafe training pack. Training packs are a single use product which ensure every WorkSafe student receives the correct training and assessment materials and is eligible for certification. WorkSafe operates an annual renewal procedure to ensure instructor competence. To maintain instructor approval you will need to:

  • Deliver WorkSafe courses to at least 30 students at any level per year.
  • Maintain your First Aid at Work qualification or recognised exemption.
  • Complete an Instructor verification during the period of approval.

There are no additional charges for annual instructor renewal if you meet the renewal criteria. Instructors who have been unable to meet the requirements will be offered a renewal course which carries a small fee dependent on whether you require a face to face or online refresher.

WorkSafe is an independent provider recognised by the HSE as a valid route to meeting workplace first aid training requirements.

WorkSafe operate an ongoing quality assurance system to ensure first aid trainers and organisations can meet the ‘Due Diligence’ checks required by the Health and Safety Executive and referenced in the Health & Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981.
