Bites (animal or human)
Bites from animals or other people carry the additional risk of infection from bacteria or viruses as well as any bleeding.
Signs & Symptoms
Visible wound and history
Treatment
- Ensure your own safety
- Wash the wound thoroughly with lots of water.
- Dry the area and treat for bleeding.
- Seek medical advice – call 999/112 for serious injuries.
Snake Bite
The European Adder/Viper is the only venomous snake in Europe. It has a haemolytic toxin venom which causes rupturing of the red blood cells which can cause anaemia and kidney failure in severe cases. Bites from this snake are, however usually mild in nature.
Signs & Symptoms
- Visible puncture wound, usually two tiny marks
- Pain, swelling, redness
- Nausea, weakness
- Sweating
- Breathing problems
Treatment
- Call 999/112.
- Keep the person calm and resting.
- Keep the bitten body part still and immobilise the affected limb, as this may slow the spread of venom.
- Remove tight clothes, rings or watches from the affected limb.
- Do not use ice, heat, pressure dressings or tourniquet.
- Do not try and suck out the venom or cut the wound to expose the venom.
