Crush Injury

Crush injury

The crushing of muscle tissue results in the release of toxins to the surrounding area. The longer the area is crushed, the bigger the build-up of toxins meaning that a quick release is preferable if possible (and safe). However, releasing a casualty who has been undergoing a crush for more than 15 minutes can lead to severe shock and so it is better to wait for trained emergency help.

Treatment

  1. Call 999/112
  2. If the casualty has been crushed for less than 15 minutes, release the casualty if it is safe to do so and if you are able.
  3. If they have been crushed for longer than 15 minutes, leave them as professional help is needed to avoid the effects of severe shock.
  4. Check for response levels and check airway and breathing. Treat any other life-threatening conditions such as severe bleeding, spinal injury  and shock. Continue to monitor breathing.
