Crush injury
The crushing of muscle tissue results in the release of toxins to the surrounding area. The longer the area is crushed, the bigger the build-up of toxins meaning that a quick release is preferable if possible (and safe). However, releasing a casualty who has been undergoing a crush for more than 15 minutes can lead to severe shock and so it is better to wait for trained emergency help.
Treatment
- Call 999/112
- If the casualty has been crushed for less than 15 minutes, release the casualty if it is safe to do so and if you are able.
- If they have been crushed for longer than 15 minutes, leave them as professional help is needed to avoid the effects of severe shock.
- Check for response levels and check airway and breathing. Treat any other life-threatening conditions such as severe bleeding, spinal injury and shock. Continue to monitor breathing.
