Crush Injury

Crush injury

A crush injury occurs when a body part becomes trapped under or between an object and heavy forces are involved. This causes damage to tissues, blood vessels and organs and toxins can build up quickly in the blood, which if released can cause severe shock and organ failure.

A quick release is preferable, if this can be achieved safely within 15 minutes, otherwise it is important to await professional medical help prior to release.

Treatment

  1. Ensure your own safety and minimise further risk.
  2. Call 999/112.
  3. If the casualty has been crushed for less than 15 minutes, release the casualty if it is safe to do so and if you are able.
  4. If they have been crushed for longer than 15 minutes, leave them as professional help is needed to avoid the effects of severe shock.
  5. Check for response levels and check airway and breathing, consider that a spinal injury may be present and take appropriate action.
  6. Treat any other life-threatening conditions such as severe bleeding, spinal injury and shock. Continue to monitor breathing.
