Recovery Position

Recovery Position

The recovery position ensures an unconscious casualty is left in a safe position with their airway open.

Action

  1. Remove any glasses the casualty is wearing and keep them safe.
  2. Straighten their legs.
  3. Move the arm closest to you out at right angles to the body with the palm facing up.
  4. Bring the far arm across their chest and hold the back of their hand against their cheek.
  5. With your other hand, lift the casualty’s far leg at the knee so that their foot remains on the floor.
  6. Keeping the casualty’s hand against their cheek, use the raised knee as a lever to roll them towards you. They should now be on their side.
  7. Adjust their upper leg so that the hip and knee are both bent at right angles. Tilt the head back so that the airway is open and fluids can drain from the mouth.
  8. Call 999/112 and continue to monitor breathing until professional help arrives.
