Introducing Zoe of Above all First Aid.
Zoe teaches Paediatric first aid in the North West region. Find out about her experiences of running her own company and what she enjoys most about teaching first aid!
How did you get into teaching first aid?
I made the jump to teaching first aid 2 and a half years ago after working in early years for 14 years. Whilst working as an early years practitioner we would often be sent on first aid courses, which I always used to really enjoy and found myself always fully submerged in the training. When I made the huge decision that I was ready for a career change, I was really unsure on what I wanted to do, until my sister suggested becoming a first aid instructor and from that point on it seemed like a no brainer and I dove head first into getting myself qualified.
What do you like about running your own business?
Starting up my own business felt really daunting at first but now I love the flexibility it gives me. I have a really good work, life balance.
How do you adapt your classes for individual learning needs?
During my courses I use different learning tools to make sure I’m catering for all learning styles, this will include videos, games, group discussions and practical time. The game that usually gets everyone laughing would be ‘heads up’, I split the group into teams of two or three and they have to guess what condition is stuck on their teammates’ manikin head. The person describing what’s on the manikin head can only use the signs and symptoms of the condition and the other person has to try and guess the condition correctly.
What do you enjoy about teaching?
I truly love teaching, I leave every course with a sense of accomplishment, the skills that we teach really are lifesaving and what could be better than that!
Would you recommend WorkSafe to your friends and family?
All of this couldn’t be possible without the amazing WorkSafe team! For anyone looking to become an instructor I would highly recommend going through WorkSafe, they are unbelievably supportive, encouraging and just all round, a wonderful team to be part of. Thank you WorkSafe!
