Heat Exhaustion
Heat exhaustion occurs when the body temperature rises above 38°C, usually because of exertion in hot conditions. It is caused when the body loses water and salt through excessive sweating. It develops slowly and it can lead to heat stroke if left untreated.
Signs & Symptoms
Signs and symptoms can include:
- Sweaty, pale skin
- Cramp
- Feeling sick with loss of appetite
- Fast, weak pulse
- Fast breathing
- Headache, confusion and dizziness
- Feeling hot but shivering
Treatment
- Find a cool place for the casualty to sit.
- Remove excess clothes and lay the person down.
- Cool the skin using appropriate means (cool cloths, cool bath or shower, fans).
- Give them plenty of water and a re-hydration sachet if possible (these will help to replace salts lost through excessive sweating).
- Get medical advice, and if the casualty’s response deteriorate, put them into the recovery position and call 999/112.
- Monitor airway and breathing.
- If symptoms persist or the casualty worsens treat for Heat Stroke
