Meningitis
Meningitis is an infection affecting the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord, causing inflammation and pressure on the brain.
The infection can be viral or bacterial. Bacterial meningitis has the risk of spreading to the blood stream, causing sepsis.
Signs & Symptoms
- Severe headache
- Nausea and vomiting
- Fever
- Rash – use a glass to press against the rash. If it doesn’t fade, that is a sign of a meningitis rash. In casualties with dark skin where a rash might not be obvious, look for a ‘pin prick’ style rash under the eyelid
- Stiff neck
- Dislike of bright lights
- Drowsiness
- Seizures
Treatment
- Urgent treatment is vital, especially if it has developed into sepsis so seek immediate medical advice.
- Dial 999 or 112 – or go to your nearest A&E if that is quicker.
- Inform medical staff that you suspect meningitis.
